Who else here would want there to be a Boys 4x1 mile added as an actual event at the state meet. Wouldn't that be sweet or what?? Or If not the 4x1 mile, why not a distance medley or something?

Why not make the meet a week long extravaganza?

4X1600 would seem to be an unneccessary event. (just an extra distance relay, in some ways like the 4 X 200 is an extra sprint relay) And as to a medley - we just got rid of the girls medley (in my opinion, a long overdue decision) - adding any medley event would seem a step back...
We have a solid selection of events at present - if any change could be made, I would favor a Thursday night session to spread out qualifying a bit more - for example, running 4 X 800 and 4 X 200 qualifying. Nearly all teams presently arrive Thursday afternoon/evening, so it would not extend the stays by any great degree.
Going to a longer meet - say 4-5 days rather than 2 would be fine, and help better select the actual best in each event, as long as people were comfortable with finals being different days. It would almost have to be mid June after all schools were out (to avoid problems with finals, etc) and that could create issues with coaches and summer programs.

I'm just saying it would be cool and it would be a real interesting race, the sprinters have 2 relays, sometimes 3 if they our 400m runners and the distance guys are stuck with just one relay, I am just saying it would be cool to see a race like that with the best distance teams in the state. And how would it be a week long extravaganza, its just add on another 1.5-2 hours on a finals day..I don't see what would be wrong ending the meet around 7 compared to 5. There wouldn't be prelims so the prelims hours would stay the same, I know it will never happen but I am just saying it would be a SWEET race.

You have to have prelims and it would make prelim day at least 2-3 hours longer with at least 3 heats for 2 classes at around 24 minutes for each girls race and 20 minutes for each guys race. Unless you are going to let 20-25 teams take the start line. Not to mention were are you going to put this relay in the order of events?
Distance runners have a team event in XC in the winter time.

It is a pretty sweet race. Kaneland used to hold a meet with that race and it was pretty cool. It would be pretty cool, but unnecessary. Other states have it, I think.

Ive always wanted to run a 4xmile i think it would b fun but i have run a couple of team miles where there r 4 runners per team and everyone runs at the same time and then the race is scored like a xc meet 1pt for 1st, 2 pts for 2nd and so on and lowest score wins. those r fun as well but i would like to run a real 4xmile

Kaneland stopped holding the meet this year. We had to go to a different meet this year. I really liked that meet too. You got tee-shirts that said Banana Relay Champs.

St. Charles East holds a meet the first weekend of April. It's the first full week that teams convert from indoor to outdoor. It's called the McCornack Invite, it's relays only, the 4x1 mile is on it but it's just so long. I'm sorry but I can't agree with everyone that keeps saying how exciting it is...from a runner's standpoint...maybe, but spectator....no way.

I think the 4x1 mile would be pretty exciting, especially for AA. The meet would be extended some, but the main lengthening would occur on the Friday pre-lims and not on the Saturday finals. Plus, they run the 4x1 mile at Nike Outdoor Nationals, so it would give some of the top Illinois teams a chance to tune up for that race.

Extra time consumption aside; running a 4+1 mile relay would be a great testament to the depth of all of the better middle-distance-distance programs. The DMR is a fun event at Top Times and would be another great event to consider, if it could be worked out.

Ugh... I doubt any class A team, few class AA teams, and less then you think class AAA teams have the depth required to run 2 quality runners in the 2mile, mile, and 800, and teams in the 4x800 and a 4xmile. It is a huge drain on a team's resources.
Also, since those would be open exchanges, it is just a lot easier to run a mile team race as described. The exchange in the sprint relays are really important, a bad one can destroy you. But they would be nothing in a 4mile relay. So why not cut the time in a quarter and just run everyone at once.
I've seen them done in some relay meets. Usually when they want to give the sprinters a rest after prelims, and I think they are kinda cool and useful in that extent. But to make it a real event... no thanks.

It would also get some more distance kids to participate. Track meets are predominatly sprinting events, and a lot of pretty good distance runners dont get a shot to compete on the track, this would be a good race for that. Of course i am biased being taht i am a distance runner.

although i think that it would be an awesome race to watch, my right arm is tired enough from running with the baton for the 4x8 let alone doin it for a mile coolrunner4 is right tho in a way, there are decent 1600 and 3200 runners (not necessarily 800 runners to run the 4x800) that would get a chance to mature in a race situation even if they are unable to get the two spots for the 16 or 32

This race would certainly be something that i would participate in what teams do you all think would do well? A, AA, and AAA?

I think if the four runners averaged between 4 25 and 4 30 it would put that team into a state qualifying position. But you never know because i dont think it has ever been done before...has it?

When I ran it, I switched hands every lap. It felt heavy running with a baton for 4 laps.

I think winnebago would be able to put together a pretty good one for class A. They had 4 or 5 guys under 5 min for a mile this summer. Imagine what all 4 or 5 could be with training for the mile.

Yeah, I ran it my first time last year, and it was great. I ran leg 6, and I loved the challenge of that last hill. What leg's have everybody ran on here if they've run it?

Leg #1 and then Leg #2's second and third run. I got to blaze the big downhill right off the start.

Way back ran I ran HS track, one of our conference rivals held the annual Fulton Relays on their English cinder track, and one of their unique races was the 4X1 mile relay. I had always wondered if any other school meets offered such a relay! Last month, my parents sent me a program from the 62nd annual Fulton Relays, and I was pleased to see that my old relay team still holds the record at 18:51.1 set back in 1984.
