The 1979 Class AA State Meet pitting The Long Green Line of York vs the Upstart Team from Maine East. Maine Esat had been coming on strong that entire season, which culminated in a 2 pt victory for the State Championship. If I recollect Maine East top 5 all ran sub-15:00 to secure the narrow margin over another outstanding York team led by David Haller and co. According to a quote I read from Coach Newton he described this as "the most difficult loss in the history of the York program!" There were some other great teams in that race such as Thornridge, Willowbrook, Naperville North, Barrington, Marist etc and even greater individuals like Jim Files Springfield, Ralph Caron Marist, Mike Sokolewicz Thornton,Mike Kirk Thornridge! What a race and year!

Just a footnote. One of the Maine East runners was Stan Ozarowski (I think he was 20th place). For the past 5 years he has been the volunteer coach at Fox River Grove Middle School (one of the feeder schools for Cary Grove HS). Before he came it was a pretty disorganized program, the teacher just told the kids to go run some. I have had 2 kids coached by him and over the years I have heard him tell the stories from his HS days when they won to try to inspire and fire up his runners. In his 5 years at Fox River Grove he has sent 5 boys teams and 2 girls teams to the IESA state finals, produced 2 state champion teams (2004 and 2006), had something like 9 all-state runners and one individual state champion. On top of this he has sent a number of good runners on to Cary Grove. All of this on his own time for no pay, He just wanted to help and give something back to the sport after working his day job. I just wanted to take this time to say... Thanks!

I remember Stan as being an integral part of that team! He was also an excellent 800 man in Track! I'VE noticed that Cary Grove's high school program has really stepped up in the last few years! Thank you for the great insight! It is my opinion that Maine East 1979 had one of the greatest teams in IHSA history along w Stan Ozrawoski, they had Mike Egle who is probably still in excellent shape! Paul Baffes,Mark Katz,Keith Warner,Bob Dluzen etc.

Those 99 teams from York and Eureka were awesome! However, that 79 team race went down to the wire between Maine East and York! 2pts! I would like to get data on the Lebanon team of 73 that finished 3rd in the state; before they went A and AA!

additional info about Orzowski at Fox River Grove: his top three runners in the 2004 iesa class a meet (1st, 11th(?) and 12th(?)) were all 8th graders who weren't even on his state qualifying team in 2003

I think that you are correct, he was deep that year and had 9 or 10 8th graders and the team had run as 7th graders the year before. I do remember that the 8th grader (Zasadil) never ran XC until his 8th grade year. Luckily his dad was into fitness and he made his kids run ever summer vacation so he showed up in shape and I think won almost every race he ran that year (against all AA schools until the state series). He ran varsity his freshman year at CG but had so sit out this year due to illness but plans to be back next year. Sorry if it seems I hijacked the thread but this seems to be a good topic too.

How about the 1991 St. Joe Ogden Spartans? Probably the most dominant Class A team ever outside of Eureka's 1999 team
4 Brian Allen Jr. 15:23 7 Melvin Goodman Sr. 15:31 15 Rick Walden Jr. 15:45 17 Joel Karry So. 15:45 21 Nick Smith Sr. 15:48 23 Tim Mies Sr. 15:51
Those times were also accomplished with a light snow on the ground in Peoria.

Also, in terms of track, I'll go with what is widely considered the greatest high school boys race ever:
1976 AA 2-mile relay final (Converted times to 3200 m)
1 Harvey (Thornton) 7:35.77 2 LaGrange (Lyons) 7:36.2 3 Rockford (East) 7:36.8 4 Chicago Heights (Bloom Twp.) 7:37.4 5 Evanston (Twp.) 7:38.4 6 South Holland (Thornwood) 7:40.6 7 Champaign (Central) 7:40.8 8 Winnetka (New Trier East) 7:42.0
For comparison, East St. Louis, the state champ in 2006 in 7:43.77, would not have even medaled in the '76 race. At the time, all 8 times were in the top 10 for U.S. all-time high school boys relay teams.

You are absolutely right, that race is legendary! They had guys popping off 1:51-1:52 legs! You have to wonder if there will ever be a 3200 relay like it again!

Yes - -the races in the mid-late 1970s were legend, and the times superb.
A minor point - ESL did not win the 4 X 800 in 2006 (7:43.77) They were 4th . Glenbard South wa sthird, York was second...
And . ...Jacobs won, with a memorable leg by a potential legend - Evan Jager - time 7:40.02 ..... and that was the best time in a couple decades ...

From the IHSA website...
1976AA - Schellenberger went 1:49.9
The next year was when Ayoub went 1:48:8 - fastest finals time.
And - remember - these are 880 yard times, which is actually a bit farther than 800 meters, so even more impressive.

Let's shift topics back to CC. Does anyone know what happened to 3 former Suburban Catholic stand-outs from the late 70's-early 80's. The 1st being John King of Immaculate Conception H.S. who was A Champ in 81? Legend has it, that he showed up for his first day of CC practice in H.S. in Baseball Cleats! He was a real talent! The other was Mike Eisele of Marian Central; another talent! Who was runner-up in 80 to Eric Volkert Peoria Bergan! The other was Rob Cull of Montini who wavered back and forth betwen A and AA IN THE 80"SWhere and did these 3 guys run collegiately?

If there are any historians out there with expertise in regards to the Suburban Catholic Conference;please give me insight on the above mentioned question. I did find out that Rob Cull went on to run at Northwestern U. before they cut their guys program!

The other was Mike Eisele of Marian Central; another talent! Who was runner-up in 80 to Eric Volkert Peoria Bergan! Eisele went to Carthage and was top ten at conference in 1983, along with Mike Newman, who was a member of the York team originally talked about in this thread. 1983: 1. Tony Bleull (North Central) 24:40.44, 2. Shemi Sabag (Augustana) 24:49, 3. Bob Dunphey (North Central) 24:56, 4. Todd Moxley (Wheaton) 25:04, 5. Ray Krauss (North Central) 25:10, 6. Mike Eisele (Carthage) 25:17, 7. Mark Meyers (Carroll) 25:25, 8. Jay Rogers (North Central) 25:32, 9. Tony VanDeWalle (Augustana) 25:38, 10. Mike Newman (North Central) 25:44.

Tony Bluell won a class A sectional in 1979 at Woodstock Marian, Ray Krauss was from Andrews - I remember racing him at the Kaneland Inv. and Jay Rogers was Porta's number one runner on their '79 state championship team. Always lots of solid class A runners in that conference.

Bluell,Krauss, and Rogers had great careers at North Central. I trained a little bit with Kraus--post-college. Thanks for the scoop on Eisele, Marian Central over the years seems to be a pipeline to Carthage.

Catching up for lost time, here. John King from IC went to Adams State to run for Joe Vigil, and was an absolute animal for at least 2 years, including an off-season hilly 4 mile road time in the 19's.

I agree with illini1 about that race, my uncle ran for central in that race, and he said it was absolutely crazy. they had 3 1 55s and a 1 57 and still got 7th. Definitely very fast. He may have been wrong but i think he said they got the 7th fastest state time in the nation that year too

The 1983 Elmwood team was the best team in Class A history until Eureka dethroned them. I believe that the SJO team you refer to had the lowest point total at the State meet with something like 46 points. Elmwood '83 5th Inskeep, 15:09 14th Harkness, 15:16 20th Johnson, 15:22 24th Smith, 15:27 Elmwood's 5th scorer finished in 27th or so with a 15:28 or 15:29. I don't remember exactly because it's been 12 years or so since I heard the story. They beat 2nd place 62-147 Either way, I think that pretty much destroys that SJO team. I also think that '99 Eureka team would have placed 2nd to York if they'd been a AA school that year.
