What was also impressive was Thornton ran without Mitch Johnston who ran 1:54 before being injured. He was a beast ran in the top 40 at the state cc meet too!
At the final exchange it looked like the Dan Ryan on a Friday afternoon.Tightly bunched field.

I realize that this great 3200 relay race took place in 1976, but is there any known video footage of the race that could be accessed from some archives? The detail on Mitch Johnston from Thornton was interesting; what a phenomenal program they had in that era! I remember and raced against Mike Sokolewicz who was the state 2 mile champion in 79! He must have been positively influenced by those guys on the 3200 relay like Moran,White,Ibarra!

When I was in HS I used to study the top times list in cross and track. I can remember the first time I saw the '76 4x8 and I was just floored. I can never wonder why I had never heard much discussion about those teams and their times. Unbelievable...and the fact that 11 out out of the top 20 times all time are from '76 is even more remarkable. Since '76 only 9 teams have been at the worst team's time or better. How crazy is it to say the worst team when that team's time was 7:42.
What about the Sitko 3200 race? That was a race for that ages too (in terms of excitement).

I wouldn't say the "worst" time. I'd just the time that wasn't as fast as the others ahead of it.

I have that Sitko Westphall 3200 on tape with the intent on putting it online. I'll find it next week and put a link to it here.

That would be sweet....didn't Westphall run like a 55 in the last 400 to beat Sitko (and go under 9 )?

How about the 1991 St. Joe Ogden Spartans? Probably the most dominant Class A team ever outside of Eureka's 1999 team 4 Brian Allen Jr. 15:23 7 Melvin Goodman Sr. 15:31 15 Rick Walden Jr. 15:45 17 Joel Karry So. 15:45 21 Nick Smith Sr. 15:48 23 Tim Mies Sr. 15:51 Those times were also accomplished with a light snow on the ground in Peoria. The 1983 Elmwood team was the best team in Class A history until Eureka dethroned them. I believe that the SJO team you refer to had the lowest point total at the State meet with something like 46 points. Elmwood '83 5th Inskeep, 15:09 14th Harkness, 15:16 20th Johnson, 15:22 24th Smith, 15:27 Elmwood's 5th scorer finished in 27th or so with a 15:28 or 15:29. I don't remember exactly because it's been 12 years or so since I heard the story. They beat 2nd place 62-147 Either way, I think that pretty much destroys that SJO team. I also think that '99 Eureka team would have placed 2nd to York if they'd been a AA school that year. Eureka in 1999 is obviously the best Class A team ever. But I don't agree that that Elmwood team would have "destroyed" SJO's 1991 team...those guys ran those times in sub-20 temperatures with a significant wind chill and snow on the ground in Peoria.

If you're talking total time for the top 5 runners I think the Elmwood team is significantly faster than the SJO team. If you also look at the average all state times for the years leading up to each teams' title year you'll notice that it looks like it was a major down period for class A when SJO won their title with 25th place times being as slow as 16:00 and no faster than 15:51 through '88, '89, '90 and '91 seasons. I think the SJO team was pretty darn awesome especially when you notice that they had less than a 30 second spread from 1-5. As a matter of fact, I watched them defend their title the next year when I was a freshman.

The definition of "greatest team race" can be based on several different criteria: lowest score, fastest times, smallest spread, etc. How about the Geneva 3A girls state champions (runners scoring) this year being all freshman? That has to be pretty special by anyone's definition.
