What Boys Illinois state track and field record marks are held by athletes from present Class A schools ? (per IHSA records)
Hint - two records - one on the track, one from field events

Historian here...
And I admit to an error. (sorry-great call, Rock)
Mike Conley does indeed hold the IHSA triple jump record - and he makes three Class A record holders.
Still one more field event Class A leader, plus a true legend holding the track record.

Historian here - good call, Old School.
Craig Virgin came from Lebanon High School -current enrollment something around 200. Clearly a small school, and just as clearly a legend. Okay - technically - IHSA did not actually divide the state into "A" and "AA" until 1975, and Virgin ran his record 8:38.7 in 1973.

The national prep record that still stands today in the 3200 was run by Jeff Nelson of Burbank,Ca on 5-6-1979. He went out in 4:16, and then finished in a 4:20! Like Virgin's accomplishments races that transcend the ages! That year in Ca(79) there were 9 guys that posted sub 9:00 in ca prep track!

Tom Smith's jump matches the national high school record, but is not recognized as such because they didn't veryify it with NFHS. That jump is just absolutely mind-boggling....We go to the Sangamon Valley Conference meet every year, and kids think his 7-4 conference record is a misprint - crazy, but true. Most college meets I go to don't have guys jumping that high, but then again, Smith did go on to win 2 NCAA titles at ISU. That's a record that I can safely say will not be broken in my lifetime...and I'm only 20.
