So, I was thinking about this last week and this could be one of the most retarded things I have ever thought of or the best idea ever.
Would you like it if the state race was like the world series in that you would have the state race multiple times. For instance, have the state race three times on separate days and then see what happens. The person or team that won 2 out of 3 times would be crowned the state champion. It would definitely shake things up and be really interesting. Also, I think that it would make the race more interesting because people wouldn't be afraid to make gutsy race moves. I'm pretty sure it would be tough to crown an individual champ, though, because I think it would change every time.
Like I said this could be really retarded or pretty cool. What do you think?

I like the way new york does things, they have their class races and they have the big meet which is a meeting of all classes. Not sure how they determine who makes the last race tho.

The idea is interesting and would be fun to watch racing strategies emerge, but one of the beauties of the state championships is that it is one race and winner(s) take all. It makes it more exciting and more valuable that way IMO. So I am not really shooting down your idea as uncool (cuz I think it is), but I just happen to like one race to determine the champs.
Here is an old idea for you. How nice would it be for provisional standards on certified courses that would allow individuals that have hit the mark on one of those courses at some point in the season automatically be given a birth to the state finals...and you could have last chance meets for indiduals. I am sure that it will never happen, but at least I think it is cool.

To elaborate on what i previously said have the "race of champions" Take the top 25 in each class(subtract the guys on teams) and take the top 5 in each class and maybe a few at large bids

How about this is one? What if they had one big cross country relay race where the individuals ran 2 or 3 miles each. That would really call for strategy and make things interesting in determining the team champions. Then again, maybe it is a stupid idea???

What if it was a setup like March Madness?

That would be cool. Dual meets all the way to the championships. I think the diffiult part would be ranking the teams accurately.

Ya, rankings would be hard, but they could have a selection sunday type show to figure it out. That would be pretty cool.

What if the races were setup this way? Each runner (1-7) runs head to head (i.e. 7 against 7, 6 against 6, etc.). The coaches determine who runs in which slot. The race starts with the 7 runners first, 5 minutes later, the 6s go, and so on. The race is scored by giving 5 points to the winner (or something like that). The team with the most points wins and advances to the next round.

I definitely agree with the fact that state is kind of sacred because you have to run the perfect race on that day. It does make the race fragile, especially when you are creating your race plan.
I like all of the ideas that people presented. We all came up with different ideas that would be completely crazy, but I love it. The march madness idea is pretty cool. It would make the season really long though. March madness is pretty crazy. When applied to running it would be awesome. The top five in each class idea thing is pretty neat too. We are all being extremely hypothetical, because the ihsa would not even think about changing anything else for a while. I really like the world series idea though. It would be cool to see how different people performed on different days.
