What observations did you make at state? What stuck out: Positives, negatives, improvements, general feelings and impressions?
1. The athletes. Thumbs up. Wow! Great racing and sportsmanship as always. Congrats to all qualifiers and coaches.
2. The truck. Thumbs down. Already brought up in another thread...the proximity of the truck to the front runners. A lot of dirt and dust kicked up in their faces. I'd be interested to hear from some of the runners who experienced it first hand.
3. Chip timers. Thumbs up. I thought this was a smooth process this year, practice makes perfect. Quick results, too. The officials did a great job.
4. Winnebago. Two thumbs up. Bago girls had 4 all staters and the boys came just short of 4 (by one place). Incredible.
5. Awards Ceremony. Thumbs up. Goes to prove that regardless of venue and previous tradition, the fans make or break the awards ceremony. I thought it was great this year.
6. Three Class System. Three thumbs up. Awesome! Great competition, racing, and depth. Yeah, there were some problems with sectional assignments (which will get straightened out in time). But, the meet itself was exciting and well run.

I loved the whole state meet experience once again. One thing I wish they would do at the awards ceremony is announce all the team scores not just the top 3. It would be nice to recognize all those who participated. Idk if this is just me because my team has been fourth two years in a row or other people feel this way. In all, State XC is awesome.

I would like to send out congrats to a few of coaches who did an outstanding job this season. First, the Erbs did another wonderful job. It is very hard to become number one and even harder to hold onto it. Winnebago had a target on their backs all season and the Erbs did another wonderful job of showing why Winnebago is the premier program in 1A. They are definitely a model to learn from. Secondly, Tony Cork did a wonderful job of getting his team healthy and running well at the end of the year. I don't know when Coach Cork will retire, but it sure was nice to see Robinson boys get a trophy after a couple of near misses in the past in fourth place. Coach Cork is one of the few coaches that I would be proud to have coach my own kids. Thirdly, I thought coach Stirrett did a wonderful job with Tolono-Unity. They were not on the radar at the beginning of the season and ended up 9th. Finally, Jim Miller did a wonderful job with a very young Cumberland team. They had a a great season and will be a major force in the state for years to come.I am sure there are many more coaches that deserve accolades, but I felt these coaches stood out among the coaches that I followed this season. Great job.

Just like to say congrats to all runners. It was another amazing year. Special thanks to Coach Miller from Cumberland one of the nicest guys in the world, and Coach Kramer of Shelbyville. Once again another great season for all invoved, and good luck in track.

I'm Tedrick from winnebago for those of you that don't know already.
Although I don't think it was as bad for my race as the AA and AAA races the truck driving in front of me was terrible. Right when I came out of the triangle I passed Feldhake and around the horse shoe the truck was kicking up a ton of dust and I got quite a bit in my mouth. It felt like someone just sucked all the water out of my mouth and threw a little bit of sand in there. It was terrible.
Thank you sparky791!

I cringed every time I saw the truck kick up a cloud of dust, and that was a lot of times!
It reminded me all too much of trying to run on a gravel road with cars constantly passing.
In defense of the race organizers, this was about the first time I have seen such dusty conditions on the state finals course.
However, the people in the truck should have noticed it right away and stayed much farther ahead of the runners. This was definitely avoidable and should have been corrected for all of the later races.

Redemption, Congrats to you and your team. You guys left no doubt that you were the best team this year. Good luck with track in the Spring.
I would like to make some comments about runners from my local area (Robinson).
Matt Feldhake- I know things didn't go as well for you as you hoped, but you are still a great runner. 11th is very respectable, plus you did win last year and no one can ever take that away. Keep your chin up.
I would like to say nice job to the Robinson boys team on their season. Last year, they placed 3rd @ Sectionals and 14th at State. This year they won their Sectional and placed 3rd at State. I am sure Coach Cork (who is one of my heroes) is very proud of you guys. Now, I would like to see you guys to start beating Newton in track.
Lastly, I would like to say "Congrats" to Graham Morris. I don't know how you keep improving each year considering no one on your team is close to your ability (same boat as Feldhake). Your 7th place finish is very impressive to me. Keep up the good work.

I also want to congratulate the runners on a great state meet and hopefully I'll have some time to point out some of the performances that I was impressed with later.
But on the condition of the course, how far are we from a greasy, sloppy mudpit with the course in that condition and we get a rain? I know it was dry down in Peoria this year and you have to deal with that, but I hope the Peoria Park district takes the time to reseed and fertilize the course so that it will be in great shape for next fall. Cross Country is a very nice economic influx into the Peoria economy and putting some of that money back into Detweiler would be a wise investment. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll get some rain during the year next season to keep the course lush. It wasn't too many years ago it seemed like the grass on the course hadn't been mowed low enough, so I realize your up against whatever mother nature throws your way.

In between races they could have lightly hosed down the course to minimize the dust. Yeah, I was the one who said that the chase truck driver was dumb. All they had to do was drive farther ahead.

The amount of dust being kicked up by the runners themselves was enough to contend with.....but was the truck driver really that unaware of the cloud he was causing? I felt bad for all the runners, I got a mouth full and was only a spectator. Some of these kids battle breathing problems already, I know it affected my son. Lets hope next year this is taken care of.

Yeah, could you imagine if it had rained all week like it did before regionals? The course would have been ridiculously sloppy. They need to put grass seed down or something or it's just going to get worse.

Im sure the park district there did some work the week before state.. what do you guys think?

I don't think that they have done any seeding work on Detweiller in a long time. Even though there are multiple races on the course throughout the year, it would not cause the grass to not be there at all. There simply was not grass in the ground really at all. There were only sparse patches here and there. They should seed in the spring and they would have no problems.

we know that dust from the truck was a problem. we left before the AAA race. apparently Derrick was able to solve the inconvenience by running ahead of the lead vehicle ;D

Yeah, it's being reported that someone in the lead vehicle actually said, "who is that crazy guy in the singlet in front of us...get him off the course!" Who new it was actually Derrick saying, "eat my dust!" Literally

With all the play it gets in the fall a periodic aeration couldn't hurt.

Ha Ha. Yeah that was good.
Another observation. Below is a list from the IHSA records menu of coaches who have won state titles in two different IHSA sports. I don't see Coach Charleton, from Eureka on the list but know he has won titles in both boys cross country and boys track. If the list is correct he missed becomng the first coach in IHSA history to coach three state titles in three different sports by 25 points.

I also don't remember so many teams getting multiple all-staters in one year. PBL, Robinson, Winnebago, Rockford Christian.

rt20: multiple class a all staters occurs more often than you think:
1978--5 teams: Woodstock Marian, Aurora Central Catholic, Chrisman, Beecher and Lebanon
1994--5 teams: Rushville, Petersburg Porta, Oregon, Normal University High and Sandwich
1999--5 teams: Eureka, Macomb, Liberty, Maple Park Kaneland, and Shelbyville
2001--5 teams: Bureau Valley, Wheaton St. Francis, Winnebago, Eureka and Unity
4 teams had multiple all staters in 85, 86, 90, 91, 95, 96, 97and 02
double check the IHSA website to see if my math or eyesight is wrong

I agree with circuit: multiple teams with all-staters is a common occurrence in Class A.
I think it's because a very talented underclassman (i.e. Robert Hanners, Ryan Young, Mike Uskali, Mike Kelly - all 4-time all-staters) can step in and be top 25 easily. The talent pool isn't nearly as deep in Class A, and Class A isn't nearly as tough as it was in the early 80s and early to mid-90s.

4 teams had multiple all staters in 85, 86, 90, 91, 95, 96, 97and 02 '96 McLeansboro still amuses me. 3 All-staters, but didn't qualify as a team. In '97, they returned all three, but came up 5 points short to Oregon. Dunlap also had 3 all-staters and came up 3rd.

Like I said I didn't remember and my memory only goes back to about 2002, although I remember in 1978 that could have very easily been a year that had six teams with multiple all-staters. Winnebago's first man ran fifth for them that day.

I just wanted to point out a team with 3 all-staters who couldn't qualify out of sectionals. I remember noticing that once looking over old results and laughing. Usually three all-staters makes you an automatic trophy contender in class A.
