What do you think the season outlook is for Class A track and Field? I do know Tuscola is already looking very tough. They have already run 1:35.5 or so for the indoor 4x200m, return Bailey in the 100m/200m, 4x100 should be tough, Surma/Carter in both hurdles, Carter in LJ/TJ, both Wienke's in the shot and disc, not too many weak spots for this team.
Monticello should be tough as always. Return some good young talent. Even with the loss of Clark due to moving, Coach Butler is a master coach and recruiter and I'm sure will find someone to help out their 4x800/4x400 teams. Their distances will be good and always find some good field events.
St. Joseph-Ogden returns 100m/200m phenom Will Lindsey, 400m runner Zach Flessner, 4x8 team that should be able to run sub 8:30 by the end, good 4x1, 4x2, 4x4 teams, 12' pole vaulter Caleb Ball, 42.5 300IH Tyler Rhodes, and some decent freshman that cold make some impacts for them this year.
Tolono Unity - Led by Zebo Zebe in the 800/400, a fairly young team that is well coached and will continue to improve.
This is just a brief description of the teams I've seen so far and know what returns.

PBL will be solid in the distance and jump events with pacey in the mile and 800, brehm in the 2 mile and mile, cardosa in the 2 mile, carlson in the 800, and tom rubarts in long, triple, and high jump. depending on how they progress i could see them possibly scoring some points at the state meet, but i guess im a little bias.

Winnebago has a well-rounded team this year. Both Thompson brothers are returning in the disc, and Brian Benning is looking really strong for only having one meet. Alex Hazzard is a top returning in the triple, but just had bad luck has year in the long and he should be strong for that too. Tedrick, Sean, and Newcomer are are strong returners in the mile and two mile. Their 4x8 is returning a 2:01 freshman and 2:02 sophomore with much room for improvement. They are a potential trophy team imo.

University High School (Uni) has all its members of its 7th place state 4x8 team returning. And Malcolm is sexy.

About how many points are needed to trophy/win at the state meet?

Depends on the year, but usually 30-40 at least puts you into the discussion for top 3-7. It also really depends on what the point distribution is...if there are a lot of teams scoring points, sometimes you can (on rare occasions) get 3rd place with a score in the low 20s.
There have been cases in girls track where one individual has been able to win a state title by herself by winning four individual events (40 points). In 1998, Kristin Owens from Downs Tri-Valley won the Class A girls' team title by winning the 100, 200, 400 and long jump.
On the boys side, Mike Conley earned a 2nd place trophy by himself for Luther South in 1981 by winning the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump.
Point being that the best "teams" in the state finals for track are outstanding individuals who can rack up points.
