The IHSA Advisory board meeting was yesterday.
There were a number of items discussed.
Changes in terms and conditions:
1. Sleeve lengths on undergarments may be different lengths, and any printing on undergarment may be different (i.e. logo on neck of long sleeve or turtleneck). Motioned, seconded, and passed.
2. Eliminate the 30 minute period provided to appeal the misapplication of a rule. Rationale: Right now there are five video cameras at the finish line, as well as a lynx system, all of which are reviewed before results are posted. There has not been an appeal of any misapplication of a rule in five years. Coaches will still have 48 hours to correct any clerical error. Passed.
3. Positioning of the video camera at regional and sectional meets was discussed. It was noted that camera angles should be in a position to capture bib numbers, uniform and finish line. This will be a point of emphasis in the meet managment handbook.
4. Having the option of using a narrow point of the chute as the finish line at Regional and Sectional meets was discussed. It was felt that the wide mouth of the chute should be used to best emulate the State meet. It was brought up that there should be some visual marker at eye level to show the finish line (i.e. a finish line banner, cones, flags). This will be a point of emphasis in the meet manager handbook.
5. The IHSA will look into the giving meet managers the same ability to download names into a meet managment program. They will try to allow the same types of files as they do for Track managers.
6. Parking was discussed. Some coaches were unaware of the desire of meet managers at the state meet to have only school busses parked along the main road. The meet managment would like all vans, mini busses, and other smaller team vehicles to park at the south end of the course (near the awards). In the future, the IHSA will communicate this to coaches in a better manner by printing this on the back of parking passes, and including it in the School & Coaches manual. The rational for this is that there is no other place for busses to park, as they do not fit in the south lot. Chris Perry (meet manager from Peoria) has expressed his apologies to those who were inconvinienced and hopes that the Park District police were not beligerent in asking people to move.
7. The minimum box size was discussed. It was found that at some regionals and sectionals, box sizes were unacceptable. At the state meet, boxes are drawn 6 feet wide. It was reccommended that boxes be at least four feet wide at regional and sectional meets.
8. It was asked by and unidentified principal, if an athlete who is an individual qualifier cannot run at the state meet, can the school notifiy the IHSA in a reasonable time frame, and then allow the next individual an opportunity to run. This is a procedure that is used by wrestling. This was discussed, and eventually was shelved.
9. A proposal was brought up to allow an additional team to qualify for the State meet from the sectionals. The rational was that this would allow for more participation at the state meet. This lead to discussion, and the following was proposed:
In the Class AAA division, there will be an aditional sectional added to the Chicagoland area. Rational: currently there are six sectionals in AA and five sectionals in class A. In addition, Class AAA will be comprised of 36% of all schools entered in cross country competition, equating to 32 more schools than Class A and 10 more schools that Class AA. This proposal was passed.
In addition, we discussed that there are plans to bring video screens onto the course to play live footage with a running time during all races.
Proposed time schedule for next year:
9 am- A girls
10 am- A boys
11 am- Class A Awards
11 am- AA Girls
12 pm- AA Boys
1 pm- AA Awareds
1 pm- AAA Girls
2 pm- AAA Boys
3 pm- AAA Awards
