Why should Derrick's time be considered the record? There shouldn't even be a discussion. If he didn't run faster than the record time, 13:51.6, then it's not a record. I mean I don't mean to be a negative person here and personally Derrick is one of my running heros, but he didn't run the time.
Any comments?

Chirs Derricks time should be the new record because craig virgin ran the best time on a shortened, different course. The detweiler course was revised a while after he ran it, so really, Chris derrick has the fastest time on the new course

Any comments? yeah, i have comments first of all, when virgin ran his record of 13:50.6, not 13:51.6 as you stated, the course was not a full three miles. Second, when derrick ran his 13:51.8 at state, the course may not have been exactly three miles, yet it was still longer than the course virgin ran in highschool, and i hardly think 1.2 seconds is enough to cover that distance. derrick has the record as far as i can see
