I knew Havel was going to loose, he had no chance. Chris Derrick killed the state field!

What's your point?

And what have you seriously accomplished in your career. Chris Derrick dererves all the credit in the world for his race, but Havel is also the first runner since Jorge Torres to have 4 straight top 5 finishes. I would be willing to bet you take his 4 finishes (5th, 3rd, 2nd and 3rd) and it would probably top your place at state. I think everyone knew Chris Derrick would win this race, I for one did not think he would do it with such ease. Havel may have lost, but he's still one of the best runners in Illinois history. Chris Derrick is the best runner in the state, but I think a lot of people would agree that if Havel was running for 2nd place he would've beaten that York kid, instead he went for the win and fell short. Congrats to both Chris Derrick and Kevin Havel.

Havel is an oustanding runner and definitely one of the best in the history of Illinois. I would also say that Achtien is pretty good himself and whether or not Havel could have beat him doesn't matter much at this point, because he didn't. Don't get me wrong - I think you have to give a lot of credit to Havel for trying to run with Derrick. That took some serious guts, but Achtien deserves some credit too. He ran an outstanding race and 14:12 isn't too shabby!

I do give credit to havel for what he has done! He will be a legend forever, but I'm just glad to see that he got beat. As much as of a stud he is I dont think he will ever be a state champion in anything, thats kind of upsetting.

I think Havel was state champ in junior high if that counts. Also don't ever count out a guy with motivation in track. Derrick proved to me he is the best in the state no doubt, and I'm taking him to win the 3200 and possible the 1600 at the state meet, but Havel will make it close. What does everybody think of Dericks shot's at Footlocker?

Read Derrick's dyestat interview where he talks about NTN and FL. He's realistic about it. Knowing he has 2 qualify in order to run the national meets. I don't think he'll give up 35s on 3 mile time in that time frame, but that wisconsin 5k is rough. Right now he's a heavy favorite with that kind of time, but a lot can happen in the next 5 weeks. Part of me says forget FL and run NTN only, then focus on possibly running the best 3200 in HS history by rebuilding his base. Dropping over 20s in the 3200m is rough when you are already at 8:54 from the previous season, but his 3200m pace at Detweiler was 9:08.

Honestly, if havel runs the 1600, he would probably beat derrick. Derrick, while probably the greatest cc and 3200 runner in illinois history, does not have taht much leg speed (relative). Havel i think, if he runs the mile, would beat derrick because of his faster pick up. But who knows, i jsut dont think its fair to create a group solely based on saying htat Havel lost. It doesnt seem fair to him after a gutsy performance.

coolrunner, I honestly think your an idot. Havel beating derrick in a mile, who are you kidding? Have you ever seen or ran against havel?? He doesnt have that much leg speed. Hes just a pure all talent athlete/endurance athlete.

actually i think your an idiot because havel ran a 1:56 800 indoor... and that takes some leg speed

It's obvious your a chris derrick fan, and thats great. We all are Chris derrick fans. But, runforthebest, you are very ignorant to compare a 3 mile cross country race to a 4 lap race around the track. I have seen Derrick run the 1600, its nothing like him running the 3200 or a cross country race. He's built to be a longer distance runner. I never said taht Havel WILL beat him, i said taht he could. Let's just get this straight, Chris derrick will not be the best 1600 runner in the state this year.

boys, boys. Let's cool the rhetoric until May and let Havel and Derrick and anybody else who qualifies settle the matter on the track. And where did we get a thread entitled Havels lose! Maybe both of you won a state championship, but I never came close and there are a lot more people posting than championships to go around

First of all, i dont know how that is relevant. secondly, i dont know what you mean...times? events? please specify and give a reason for a seemingly irrelevant question.

what events, and times. Im asking because i want to know how you know so much about a mile race.

I dont really think events or times have anything to do with my knowledge of a mile race. I am a cross country and distance track runner, im not elite. All im saying is my opinion, and Havel can drop a pretty sick 800 time ( 1 56 indoor). Im not saying Derrick cant do that, All im saying is taht Havel has a lot of legspeed. And ive seen derrick run the mile, i dont think he has AS MUCH leg speed as havel does. They are both great runners.

I do agree, they are both amazing runners. But ive seen havel race lots of times and in my opinion derrick can take out havel in a mile race. Yeah he has a good 800 indoor but thats not a mile race outdoor

Well tahts fine if taht is your opinion. The reality of it is is that they probably wont race in the mile. Derrick will run the two mile only and Havel will probably do the same with maybe running the mile. So it wont matter. This thread is silly as i have stated before.

Kevin Havel was a national champion, also. The meet was the 2004 USA Track and Field Junior Olympics National XC Championships held at Busse Woods (Schaumburg Sectional.) The age division was 13-14 and was Havel's freshman year. There were 2,800 athletes from all 50 states. Kevin was the unanimous selection to read the Athlete's Oath at the opening ceremonies. www.usatf.org/events/2004/USATFJuniorOlympicXCChampionships/results/national/yb.asp
