I have to say that I am a fan of Stevens, b/c he is a Class A runner that hasn't seemed to get a lot of respect and was IMO the best runner in the state his senior year. However, Jager is an absolute stud! His 800, Mile, & 2 Mile times are just ridiculous. It is really close between Jager and Sage. Torres probably had the best high scool career, but Sage and Jager are the two best IMO.

The other thing to keep in mind is that craig virgin was pretty good himself and he ran on cinder tracks and not all-weather. In fact, Vrigie makes that argument himself. I bet if you asked him who the best runner in Illinois history was he wouldn't hesitate to tell you he was!

Yeah I'm pretty sure I read something last year where they asked Virgin if he thought he could beat Jager, and he said something about Jager not even being in the same class as him. The Great White Hope has always been pretty full of himself.

Uh, Virgin never really lacked confidence huh? For that matter he still doesn't. I think it is a bit over the top to think Jager isn't in the same league, b/c his times prove he is. I would still give a slight edge to Virgin though.
Can you imagine how good Virgin would be if he were running in this era. I think with all of the advancements in training (strength training, etc.). Wow!

I won't get into the debate over who had the best high school career, but I definitely subscribe to the cinder track argument for Virgin and guys of his era.
There's only one stat that matters here:
Craig Virgin is the only American man to ever win the IAAF World Cross-Country title, and he did it twice (1980 and 1981).
END OF DISCUSSION

If I might add to that:
At Detweiller Park, Peoria 13:50.6, Craig Virgin, Lebanon, 1972 13:56.6, Tom Graves, Orland Park (Sandburg), 1977AA 13:57.7, Dave Walters, New Lenox (Lincoln-Way), 1973 13:59, Craig Virgin, Lebanon, 1971 14:00, Jim Spivey, Bensenville (Fenton), 1977AA 14:00.0, Jorge Torres, Wheeling, 1998 14:00, Jorge Torres (Sr.), Wheeling, 1998AA 14:03, Donald Sage, Elmhurst (York), 1999AA 14:06, Bill Fritz, Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West), 1973 14:07, Evan Jager, Algonquin (Jacobs), 2006AA 14:08, Len Sitko, Niles (Notre Dame), 1986AA 14:08.5, Tom Graves, Orland Park (Sandburg), 1976AA
1600-Meter Run [1.] 3:58.9, Donald Sage, Elmhurst (York), 2000 [2.] 4:02.4*, Tom Sullivan, Evanston (St. George), 1961 [3.] 4:04.1, Craig Virgin, Lebanon, 1973 [20.] 4:07.9, Tom Graves, Orland Park, Sandburg), 1978
3200-Meter Run [1.] 8:38.7*, Craig Virgin, Lebanon, 1973 [2.] 8:42.89, Donald Sage, Elmhurst (York), 2000 [3.] 8:46.7*, Dave Merrick, New Lenox (Lincoln-Way), 1971 [4.] 8:49.6*, Ron Craker, Elmhurst (York), 1976 [5.] 8:49.7*, Tom Graves, Orland Park (Sandburg), 1977 [6.] 8:52.1, Mike Patton, Chicago (St. Ignatius), 1981 [7.] 8:52.33, Evan Jager, Algonquin (Jacobs), 2007
Virgin's performances really set him apart (All-Time). You know Tom Graves was pretty darn good himself. How about his son coming back to Illinois and putting a beat down on Havel and Holmes. Graves should really be in the discussion with the all time greats like Sage, Jager, et. al.
It is worth adding that Jager's performance at NON was pretty good.
Mile 3 963 Evan Jager 07 Algonquin, IL 4:05.68
2 Mile 4 963 Evan Jager 07 Algonquin, IL 8:47.59 8:14.8'

Gotta say it again...Craig Virgin. Not based on just how hard he worked (all these guys worked hard), not based on potential, not based on one race.... He posted 2 sub-14 minute state victories at Detwieller. Craig Virgin won five Illinois State High School Championships in both cross country and track. He has held the state meet record of 13:50.6 for three miles in cross country at Detwieller for almost 35 years) and 8:42.6 for the two-mile. In June 1973, his 8:40.9 time broke the legendary Steve Prefontaine’s former national high school record. At the University of Illinois he won 9 Big Ten Championships, one NCAA Championship.Team. He was a three-time U.S. Track & Field Champion, set multiple American records, qualifying as a three-time U.S. Olympian in the 10,000-meter run, and becoming a two-time World Cross Country Champion. His cross country wins in Paris in 1980 and Madrid in 1981 remain the only victories for an American man in that renowned event. I think he's the best distance man ever to come out of Illinois so far.

Let me just add that he has the Southern Illinois Meet of Champions record for the Mile and 2 mile of 4:06 and 8:42 respectively! I might add that those races were the same day. Top that!

I believe that he is being red-shirted this year.

Yeah I herd something about a injury. Talking about Wisco, two other runners on the list are running very well up there. Ryan Craven is running very well, and is on the varisty squad. Matt Winthrow is battleing some sort of injury, but he's still there number one, and he just one a meet out in Oregon.

I would really like to see havel take the win. I have a lot of respect for chris...hes such a good runner at such a young age...but thats just it, hes to young. haha. Props to him for being so good, but i just like to see the older more experienced person win. plus i feel right now that chris is the better runner, so you always root for the underdog. not that havel is just that, i just think chris is a little better.

if anything, Derrick would be the "underdog" Havel has been amazing his whole 4 years as a runner. While Derrick started out as a freshman about as average as can be. If Derrick one it would be more inspiring than Havel winning...no offense to Havel, but im rooting for Derrick.
